What is vacuum packaging?
Before entering the world of vacuum packaging bags, it is worth clarifying what vacuum packaging is.
Vacuum packaging is a technique that allows to extend the shelf life of a product and protect it against external elements. The technique consists of extracting the air from the product to be packaged so that the product would be placed in a bag with no air. Special machines such as packaging machines are used for this.
Vacuum packaging functions
Some of the main functions of vacuum packaging are as follows:
- Protect fresh produce from drying out.
- Protect dry products from moisture absorption.
- Protect products from light, oxygen and other external gases.
- Protect products against loss of aroma.
- It prevents products from absorbing bad odors that may be in the environment.
- It prevents the growth of microorganisms and limits the growth of aerobic bacteria and fungi.
- The sale is encouraged due to its attractive presentation to the public.
Types of vacuum packaging bags
The thickness of the bag and the ratio of polyamide to polyethene will determine the different types of bags for vacuum packaging. The greater the thickness of the bag, the greater the resistance of the bag; however, it loses transparency and therefore optical properties.
Let’s see some of the most frequent as well as their use:
- 80-micron vacuum bags
This type of bags is made with a ratio of polyamide (20) and polyethylene (60). Excellent optical properties, transparency and high resistance.
Packaging of fresh and sliced products. They are used for the storage and preservation of all kinds of foods, be they vegetables, fruits, meats, fish and even sauces and other types of liquids. Due to their special conditions and barrier they can be stored in the freezer preventing the formation of frost.

- 90-micron vacuum bags
90-micron vacuum packaging bags are manufactured in a ratio of polyamide (20) and polyethylene (70). Excellent optical properties, transparency and high resistance. These bags are suitable for storage and preservation of all kinds of foods, vegetables, fruits, meats, fish and even sauces and other types of liquids. Due to their special conditions and barrier they can be stored in the freezer preventing the formation of frost.
Like 80 microns, being similar in thickness they are suitable for storage and preservation of all types of food.
- 120-micron vacuum bags
The 120-micron vacuum bags are stronger than the 90 microns. However they are not sterilizable nor can they be cooked. They are pasteurizable at 80ºC for a time of 30 minutes.
